Call of Duty: WWII PC Open Beta Has Officially Begun

Last updated on by jEX

There once was a time when shooter fans had a nearly unlimited supply of World War 2 games to choose from. Medal of Honor. Call of Duty. Battlefield 1942. Hidden and Dangerous. The list went on.

There was no mystery why. World War 2 was the biggest conflict in human history and undoubtedly the most interesting. For history buffs, these games allowed players to journey back in time to the 1940s and experience the European theater of war in the same cinematic way that had been popularized by “Saving Private Ryan” and “Band of Brothers”.

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. The greatest World War II shooter of all time.

Perhaps the best part about these games though was the guns. You had classic Allied ones like the M1 Garand (complete with its iconic sound when the clip emptied), the Thompson sub-machine gun, and the Springfield (one of the greatest sniper rifles ever). On the Axis side, you had the MP-40, and my personal favorite, the Karabiner 98k.

There reached a point, however, when developers started shifting away from making historical shooters and moved towards more modern day settings that reflected the conflicts in the Middle East. Devs claimed this was because WW2 games had become saturated and gamers lost interest. Whatever the reason, the trend took over the whole damn genre – the lowest point being the beloved Medal of Honor being rebooted as a shitty modern shooter – and for traditional FPS fans, it was an absolute borefest.

Well, like the saying goes, what was old is new again. Call of Duty is going back to World War II on November 3, 2017 with Call of Duty: WW2. Now we get to experience WW2 with the glory of modern technology.

Over on Twitter, the developers of the game have announced that the multiplayer beta, which was supposed to start tomorrow, has been launched a day early, and you can download and start playing it NOW using the link below. You can also just search for “Call of Duty: WWII – PC Open Beta” on Steam.

Historical shooter fans rejoice! Now load up, fall in line, and get ready to storm Normandy.
